Mosaic was a personal passion project, born out of the love of being immersed in gorgeous imagery—the dopamine hit that comes with finding something beautiful; the places your imagination takes you when crafting together cohesive visual stories out of what had been singular and disparate images.
The backstory: After designing and art directing for the last 20 years, throughout every iteration of my career, the one common thread has been the consistent need for high-quality imagery and the subsequent challenge of finding it. So I set out turn my love of visual storytelling and hunting and gathering into a resource that helps other creatives like me. The goal was to save creatives time and energy, while also providing a distinct visual point of view they could use in their work.
In a nutshell, I searched the stock sites, pulled together gorgeously curated photo collections using only the best free stock imagery out there, and packaged these collections of links for sale as a digital product. Collections were highly inspired by my time traveling abroad and living on Maui.
After having the business idea, developing the branding, and creating the first photo collections, I designed and built Mosaic's e-commerce shop on Shopify. Maxing out the theme's native capabilities and heavily leveraging metafields, I created a visually dynamic site that highlighted the gorgeous imagery contained in each collection—without giving everything away. Careful attention was paid to conveying the vibe and the feeling of each collection to customers, as well as ensuring that the entire site wass easily discoverable since the Mosaic concept is a new one to the stock photography world.
Mosaic was an incredibly satisfying creative outlet for me: a way to scratch the curatorial itch in my brain; an opportunity to throw the guardrails off and let my imagination wander; and a dopamine-fueled digital escape to the visual worlds I created in each collection. While I've since taken the site down, you can still check out the core spirit of the project on Instagram.
